As part of your application, you will have provided the names and contact details of two individuals and one of these should be the present employer or the most recent employer. Character references alone are only acceptable if you are a school-leaver or have no previous employment history.   

If, for any reason, the line manger requires references from additional previous employers, it is possible to request this e.g. if there are any gaps in employment or if you have changed jobs frequently.  

If you are an internal applicant or applicant from another local authority, we must receive a satisfactory reference only from your current line manager. 

DBS Posts  

The Council must contact both referees before the interview.  

If you do not currently work with children or vulnerable adults, but have done so in the past, it is important to receive a reference from the most recent employer in the field of children or vulnerable adults.   

If you are an internal applicant or applicant from another local authority and you do not currently work with children or vulnerable adults, but have done so in the past, it is important to receive a reference from the most recent employer in the field of children or vulnerable adults. 

If successful in being called for an interview, it is required in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006 that all Employers carry out a basic check to ensure that they are not braking the law by employing a person illegally.  

You need to bring one of the following original documents with you to the interview:

  • Your Passport or  
  • Full birth certificate which includes parent’s name and P45 or P60 or
  • National identity card  
If you are offered the job and you accept, then you need to have a copy of the relevant documents on your personnel file.

If you attend an interview, you must provide evidence of your qualifications. If you are offered the post and you accept, then a copy of your qualifying certificates needs to be on your personnel file.

Successful application for posts which involves working with children or vulnerable adults will be required to make an application for disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service. Successful applicants for such posts will receive an email which includes a link and guidelines how to complete the form online.
