Storiel doubles target in seven months

Seven months after opening its doors to the public, Storiel welcomed its 50,000th visitor over the summer months and by now, over 65,000 people have been welcomed to Storiel.

This is by far more than double the annual target of 25,000 visitors set for the re-launched museum and art gallery in Bangor.

To mark the occasion, a £25 voucher will be awarded to the special visitors Karen Wood and Simon Higgins from Caernarfon to spend at the Storiel shop. The gift vouchers have just been launched this week for those who wish to buy their families or friends a special present of local significance.

Following a major £2.6 million refurbishment, secured with the help of a £1.4 million contribution from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery was re-opened as Storiel earlier this year. As well as the museum and art gallery, it also boasts a community exhibitions area, a learning space, meeting rooms, a shop and a cafe.

It is part of a Gwynedd-wide project, with five satellite sites to be opened soon.

Councillor Mandy Williams-Davies, Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member for the Arts said:

“We are delighted with Storiel’s phenomenal success. It is a truly remarkable achievement to have doubled the annual target of visitors in little over six months.

“It is to the credit of all the people who have worked to hard to transform the old Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery into a state of the art centre that has so much to offer for local people and visitors alike. We now hope to build on this success so that its five satellite sites will also prove to be equally popular.

“If you are not among the 65,000 who have already been to Storiel, do come to see it for yourself - I’m sure you’ll find something of interest for people of all ages. I’m also sure that a gift voucher from Storiel’s shop would make an excellent choice if you are looking for that special present for somebody.”

Storiel is also home to a shop that includes a range of produce by Welsh artists and crafters including  jewellery, pottery, wood and slate goods - something for everyone!

Storiel is also home to the popular Seibiant cafe which recently also served its 50,000 customer which was Mandy Jones-Hann and family from Llanrug.

Storiel is open from 11am to 5pm every day from Tuesday to Saturday.

The re-development of the Gwynedd Museum and Gallery – Storiel - at its new home was made possible with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Welsh Government, Gwynedd Council, Bangor University, Bangor City Council, The Arts Council of Wales, Ashley Family Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation, Cadw, The Wolfson Foundation, Welsh Slate and Friends of Storiel.
