Caring for the Environment through the Green Libraries project

Date: 24/04/2023

As part of the Green Libraries project, over the Easter holidays users at three Libraries in Gwynedd had the opportunity to learn more about caring for our environment. Nature Workshops were held by attending by Wild Elements which gave children and families the opportunity to attend a Nature Connections Workshop for younger children, and older children had the opportunity to build a beehouse or bird box in the Nature Box activity.

As part of the Nature Box activity young naturalists were given the opportunity to use a power drill and tools (under strict supervision) to build their own bee house or bird box that they could proudly take home and install in their own garden or green space.

The activities over the Easter holiday are part of the Green Libraries project, running until the end of June. The Green Libraries Wales Small Grant Fund aims to support small-scale exploratory programmes, activities, and knowledge-sharing within libraries in Wales seeking to improve overall understanding and take actions to demonstrate Environmental Responsibility.

Natural Resources Wales has been awarded £2,500 from CILIP Cymru Wales’s Green Libraries Wales Small Grant Fund to provide a selection of books in both Welsh and English to Gwynedd Libraries, which can also be ordered on request from library members in Anglesey, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham Libraries.

Nia Jeffreys, Cyngor Gwynedd Cabinet member for Economy and Community said:

“Contemporary books for adults and children in both Welsh and English is available in Bangor, Caernarfon, Porthmadog and Dolgellau Libraries to help inform the public about nature, the climate emergency, natural history, and biodiversity and to help empower people to make changes in their own lives.

"For a limited time, and while stocks last, everyone who borrows, or requests a book from The Green Library collection in Gwynedd will be offered a free packet of wildflower seeds with their book. The project runs until the end of June, but it is hoped the project can be extended and, in the future, to create partnerships with public libraries across Wales.”
