Dolgellau children’s community pride

A total of 20 local children came to support a Tidy Towns scheme at Marian Dolgellau recently to take part in a litter picking event.

Kitted up in their new high viz jackets, pickers and gloves, the Rainbow, Brownies and Guides got together with 14 parents and volunteers to spruce up this historic and well used area of the town.

The industrious group of children, who were working towards a community badge, collected an impressive total 20 bags of litter. They were later rewarded for their efforts with a drink and biscuits at the pavilion.

Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member for the environment, John Wynn Jones, said: “I’m very pleased to see that Dolgellau’s residents and especially the town’s young folk are showing an interest in civic pride. Dolgellau is one of Gwynedd’s most picturesque market towns and i am pleased that Tidy Towns has helped its residents keep it that way.”

Local member, Councillor Linda Morgan noted: “It was great to get everyone together to improve our local environment. The community pride was very evident from all the children and volunteers taking part in clearing up this beautiful part of the town. I am very grateful to everyone who took part.”

Gwynedd Council Tidy Towns Officer, Jonathan Gwyn Neale, added: “The Marian has been used by Dolgellau residents for over 200 years and has become an important part of town’s recreational heritage, so it’s great to see that local people and youngsters alike are continuing to respect and care for it.”

Those who organised and present at the event included: June Jones, the local Brownie and rainbow leader, Councillor Linda Morgan, Ambassador of Girlguiding Meirionnydd; Mayor Cllr Dyfrig Siencyn, Cllr Delwyn Evans and Chairperson of the Marian Trustees, Cllr Heilyn Williams.

The bags of litter were removed by Gwynedd Council’s Street Cleaning Team.
