Unique portrait of Lloyd George on show at Llanystumdwy

Lloyd George
The painting of Lloyd George by Vincent Evans

A wonderful portrait of former Prime Minister David Lloyd George which has hardly been seen by the public since it was created during the mid-1930s is now on display at the Lloyd George Musuem at Llanystumdwy.

The painting of Lloyd George has not been exhibited very much since it was created by Welsh artist, Vincent Evans in 1936, nine years before the death of the politician.

Nest Thomas, Gwynedd Council’s Museums and Galleries Officer said:

“We are very pleased to be able to exhibit this wonderful portrait of Lloyd George in the Museum that bares his name.

"It is a privilege to lend the painting so that the local residents of the area where the former Prime Minister grew up as well as visitors from further afield.

"This is a contemporary and honest portrait which has hardly been seen by the public since it was created in 1936.

“I hope this unique portrait will encourage more people to visit the Lloyd George Museum in Llanystumdwy where there is a wide variety of interesting artefacts and information about one of the greatest statesmen of the twentieth century.”

This portrait of Lloyd George dates back to 1936 and it is on loan from D Lloyd George, Swansea.

It is a portrait by Vincent Evans, who was born in Ystalyfera, Swansea. From the age of 13 he worked as a collier, and ten years later he won a scholarship to the Swansea School of Art.

Alongside Evan Walters and Archie Rhys Griffiths, he was one of a group of south Wales artists who painted their industrial communities with a new honesty.

The Lloyd George Museum is a treasure trove of information and unique artefacts representing the life and times of David Lloyd George, including a Discovery Corner and Children's Story where you can have the opportunity to dress in Victorian costume, to play with period toys and to write on slate and to learn what it was like to grow up during Lloyd George’s childhood.

The Museum is open every day throughout September (10.30am-5pm), and from Monday to Friday during October (11am-4pm).
