Unoccupied / Partly Occupied Properties

Unoccupied Property Rating
Owners of unoccupied non-domestic properties may be liable to empty property rates which are charged at 100% of the normal liability.

Liability begins after the property has been empty for 3 months or, in the case of factories and warehouses, after 6 months. Certain types of property are exempt from empty property rates.

Empty properties with a rateable value under £2,600 are also exempt from empty property rates.

Rate Relief for Partly Occupied Properties
Where it appears to the authority that part of a property is unoccupied and will remain so for a short period, then the authority can ask the Valuation Office for an apportionment of the rateable value and therefore charge rates on the occupied part.
