Great Start to Dwyfor's New Refuse Collection Service

On 4 February, changes were introduced to the way waste is collected in Dwyfor. The introduction of the new refuse collection arrangements in the Dwyfor Area have so far gone very well and Gwynedd Council wishes to thank the residents of Dwyfor for their co-operation in implementing this change.

Since this date, household waste from Dwyfor homes (green wheelie bin or up to 3 bin bags) are collected one week, and the garden waste (brown wheelie bin) the following week.

At present, the Council can only accept garden waste in the brown wheelie bin. However, when the Council's new composting facility opens at Ffridd Rasus Civic Amenities Site in Harlech in a few months time, Dwyfor residents will also be able to dispose of all types of kitchen waste in their brown wheelie bin. We will be sending information to householders to explain in detail which foods they will be able to put in their brown bin as soon as soon as the new kitchen waste composting facility is up and running.

The blue box service remains as it is unless you have received correspondence stating otherwise, and you can use your blue box for paper, glass, tins/cans, aerosols, household batteries and foil. Most Dwyfor homes can also use their blue box to recycle any plastic bottles.

Councillor Wyn Williams who leads on the Environment on Gwynedd Council said:

"The response to the changes has been encouraging, and I would like to thank Dwyfor residents for their efforts.  These changes are an important step forward if Gwynedd is to decrease the amount of waste sent to landfill, and reach the challenging targets set by the Assembly Government for all Council's  to recycle 40% of our waste by 2009/10."

"I would like to remind all Dwyfor residents that next week (18 - 22 February), we will be collecting household waste (green wheelie bin), and then the following week (25 - 29 February) we will be collecting your garden waste (brown wheelie bin)."

Officers from the Waste Management Service will be out and about in Dwyfor during the next few weeks to continue to monitor the situation and to resolve any outstanding problems.

If you have any questions about waste collection or recycling, or if you  would like an additional blue recycling box or haven't been provided with a brown wheelie bin, contact Gwynedd Council's Waste and Recycling Helpdesk on (01286) 679 872 or e-mail recycling@gwynedd.gov.uk
