Background
Gwynedd and Anglesey Schools Arts Agency was formally established in September 2003 with the aim of facilitating the process of a attracting artists to schools and promoting more arts activities for the children and young people of the county. Prior to the establishment of this Agency, it was observed that the arts provision at the schools was patchy and that it was all dependent on individual headteachers’ desire and skillfulness to complete forms and organise visits.
Direct Grants for Schools
Schools can apply for grant aid from Gwynedd and Anglesey Schools Arts Agency so as to hold residential artist projects. There is a strong belief in presenting an accessible application system with decisions being taken rapidly so as to reduce bureaucracy within schools. Schools will need to find up to 35% of match funding for each project. (Capital projects are not funded.) Schools are encouraged to cluster, preparing a grant application jointly. Schools are encouraged to take advantage of an appropriate arts provision presented by the diverse Festivals held and the arts clubs within both Counties so as to support these activities and promote participation and interest amongst young people.
Training
The Agency organises special courses for artists where training is provided on how to hold arts projects in schools. Hopefully, sessions for teachers can be held to raise awareness of the arts field extending support to organising and planning projects in schools in the near future This will hopefully open the door to schools who have not held arts activities in the past.
