The community-led project has been developed over six years by Cwmni Gwynant Cyf, a committee of seven local residents who have worked tirelessly to safeguard the building for the future generations of Nantgwynant.
Dewi Lewis, Chair of the Gwynedd Economic Partnership, said:
“The opening of Capel Bethania is a credit to the hard work and commitment of the local community and members of Cwmni Gwynant Cyf. The project is yet another example of the creative and innovative work being led by our communities in Gwynedd.
“I hope that we will continue to see the development of similar projects in communities across Gwynedd in the new European funding period from 2007-2013.”
The company was established to purchase and convert Bethania, the Presbyterian Church in Wales’ former chapel with the aim of providing a building suitable for sustainable small businesses and community use.
The £276,813 renovation of the chapel was designed by the Dobson Owen Partnership and the building work carried out by Pritchard and Griffiths.
The chapel was originally purchased by Cwmni Gwynant with grant assistance from Gwynedd Council and the Snowdonia National Park Authority. The renovation was made possible thanks to assistance from European Objective 1 - £136,031, the Welsh Assembly Government’s regeneration initiative - £125,000 with additional contributions from Cwmni Gwynant and the local community through continuous fundraising.
Rhodri Morgan AM said:
"Capel Bethania is a great example of what can be achieved with the co-operation and hard work of the local community so it is very fitting that the Welsh Assembly Government has been able to support this project. The renovated chapel is sure to become a focal point for the village of Nangwynant, which will help maintain the building as an important community resource for many years to come."
John Till, chairperson of Cwmni Gwynant added:
“We have retained the character of the old chapel and ensured the utilisation of local products and materials where possible. Although the project has been challenging for a volunteer group, we are extremely grateful of the assistance that we have received and are proud of having this significant new facility for the community and for visitors.
“As a company we are delighted that we have achieved our aims and now see a thriving business located in the building.”
The chapel now houses a local business – Caffi Gwynant, where home-made cooking and a varied menu provides sustenance to visitors and the community and also provides a vital meeting point for the community within this rural area.
Councillor Dafydd Iwan, who leads on Development on Gwynedd Council said:
“The renovated Capel Bethania, Nantgwynant is an excellent example of what can be achieved when communities work together to develop projects that respond to the needs of local people.
“Tribute must be paid to the Gwynedd Economic Partnership, its members, successful applicants and the officers from Gwynedd Council for the efficient work which has been achieved throughout the County in order to ensure the success of the Objective 1 programme locally.”
