


A native of the mountains of California where one of the trees, called 'General Sherman', is the largest individual living thing on earth and is estimated to weigh 2,000 tonnes. The spongy reddish bark is resistant to forest fires.
The species was introduced to Britain by William Lobb in 1853. The tree at Glynllifon was planted by the Hon. Frederick Wynn in 1880 and by 2003 it measured 5 metres in girth.
