Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) - Llŷn

Porth Ysgaden

Welcome to the Llŷn AONB web pages!

The designation of Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is the responsibility of the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) and to date 5 AONB have been designated in Wales – Gower, Anglesey, Clwydian Range, Llŷn and Wye Valley (partly in England). In England, the responsibility for AONBs lies with the Countryside Agency which, together with its predecessor, The Countryside Commission, has designated 37 areas. The Countryside Council for Wales has overall responsibility for AONBs in the national context but they are managed by Local Authorities with the support of local communities and partnerships. The Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 has imposed new duties on local authorities in relation to the protection of AONBs. The principal new duty is the preparation of a Management Plan that will include an assessment of the state of the area, establish a vision and objectives for the future and set out an action plan.
